Photographs of a giant spider eating a bird in an Australian garden have stunned wildlife experts.

The pictures show the spider with its long black legs wrapped around the body of a dead bird suspended in its web.

The startling images were reportedly taken in Atheron, close to Queensland's tropical north.

Despite their unlikely subject matter, the pictures appear to be real.

Joel Shakespeare, head spider keeper at the Australian Reptile Park, said the spider was a Golden Orb Weaver.

"Normally they prey on large insects… it's unusual to see one eating a bird," he told ninemsn.com.

Mr Shakepeare said he had seen Golden Orb Weaver spiders as big as a human hand but the northern species in tropical areas were known to grow larger.

Queensland Museum identified the bird as a native finch called the Chestnut-breasted Mannikin.

Mr Shakespeare told ninemsn the bird must have flown into the spider web and become stuck.

"It wouldn't eat the whole bird," he said.

"It uses its venom to break down the bird for eating and what it leaves is a food parcel," he said.

Greg Czechura from Queensland Museum said cases of the Golden Orb Weaver eating small birds were "well known but rare".

"It builds a very strong web," he said.

But he said the spider would not have attacked until the bird weakened.

The Golden Orb Weaver spins a strong web high in protein because it depends on it to capture large insects for food.

Imagine that there is a spider with the size of an adult's crawling in my leg or my face when i am sleeping ... just creep me out I don't want one of these things i my backyard

This story reminds me of a terrible memory few years ago, I found a pretty big spider in the bathroom I was totally freaked out and screamed crazily while running out of the bathroom it was at the size of a crab, the ones we usually see in rice field crops you know for a kid, it was rather a giant scary monster ever seen :">
after all, as revenge for all the tears I shed and the fear I had, I took a rubber slipper and the spider ended up like every other cockroaches those got in my house

Wow!!! u r brave . If I were u, I would rather tell mama and let she do that "stuff" , and I scare hate cockroaches too T_T, their smell horrible

cockroaches... when it rains, just my house's toilet is full of them, and sometime it even had something like big centipede boss

i doubt its venom can kill a adult human unless it is kind of Brazilian spider. And to make you become a spring roll at least its size must be as big as a 17" CRT monitor

Generally, a spider bite can be very, very painful but not dangerous, including that of tarantula.



It can be dangerous for small child, ill person or the elderly. The black widow bite can cause extreme pain in the stomach; sometimes with convulsions and muscle spams.



Treatment: take aspirin or some pain killers. Putting ice on the sting may be useful. Some anti convulsion may help too. But these are usually not over-the-counter drugs. Seek medical help.

May be everything goes by that law

Until 12 yrolds, I still believed that when spider be killed they turn in to water
That conclusion came from 8 yrolds when I accidentally steped on one of "them"
Unnoticed that the dead spider has sticked on my slipper, the place where it was remained nothing but water
That explained why I scare of cookroach a little but nothing for spider

Their venoms are said to be very potent but they are quite too small to do any good.

That's just a general rule; there are always exception. Penicillin is not toxic. But if you are allergic to it; you may get an adverse shock and die quite fast.

BTW, what I wrote is found in "Where there is no doctor".

From another biology book. Fatalities rate for spider bites are less than five per year in the US. Far lower than snake bites and car accidents.

Typically, they have 8 eyes in 2 rows.
